From preventive cardiology to complex cardiac procedures, all under one roof with world-class expertise.
Interventional cardiology treats heart and blood vessel problems using thin, flexible tubes called catheters — guided through the blood vessels to the heart — without opening the chest. The catheter is inserted through a small puncture, usually in the wrist or groin, and advanced to the blocked or narrowed area using real-time X-ray imaging.
Once in position, the cardiologist uses specialised tools to open the blockage, place a stent, close a defect, or replace a valve — all from inside the blood vessel. No large incisions. No general anaesthesia in most cases. Most patients are awake and comfortable throughout, and the majority go home the next day.
The key advantage: interventional cardiology can diagnose and treat a problem in the same session. A patient who comes in for a coronary angiography can often have their blockage treated with angioplasty before they leave the cath lab.
Coronary angiography is the definitive test for diagnosing blocked coronary arteries. A contrast dye is injected through a catheter, and X-ray images show the exact location and severity of any blockages. The procedure takes 20 to 30 minutes. If a significant blockage is found, angioplasty can be performed immediately in the same session — so the patient does not need to go through a second procedure on a separate day.
Angioplasty is the most commonly performed interventional cardiology procedure. A small balloon on the tip of a catheter is guided to the blocked artery and inflated — pushing the plaque against the artery wall and opening the vessel. A stent (a small metal mesh tube) is then placed inside to keep the artery open permanently. At Citadel Hospital, we use drug-eluting stents (DES) that release medication to prevent the artery from narrowing again. Most patients feel immediate relief from chest pain and are discharged within 24 hours.
The aortic valve controls blood flow out of the heart. When it becomes too narrow — a condition called aortic stenosis — the heart has to work harder and harder until it eventually weakens. Traditionally, replacing this valve required open-heart surgery. With TAVI, a new valve is guided to the heart through a catheter and implanted without opening the chest. Most patients experience a dramatic improvement in symptoms — reduced breathlessness, better energy, and improved quality of life — within days of the procedure.
Some patients are born with a small hole in the wall between the heart's chambers — called an atrial septal defect (ASD) or ventricular septal defect (VSD). If the hole is large enough to affect the heart's function, it needs to be closed. At Citadel Hospital, most of these closures are performed using a catheter-based technique — a small closure device is guided to the hole and deployed to seal it, with no surgery required.
Blocked arteries are not limited to the heart. Peripheral arterial disease affects the arteries in the legs — causing pain when walking, cramping in the calves, and in severe cases, non-healing wounds. Our interventional team performs peripheral angioplasty and stenting to open these blocked leg arteries and restore healthy blood flow, using the same catheter-based, minimally invasive approach.

Every procedure at Citadel Hospital meets the highest national standards for patient safety, sterility, and clinical outcomes. NABH accreditation is not just a certificate — it is a commitment to doing things right, every time.
Our cardiac catheterisation laboratory is equipped with advanced real-time digital imaging. It operates around the clock — for planned procedures during the day and cardiac emergencies at any hour of the night.
In most cases, if a significant blockage is found during coronary angiography, our team can treat it with angioplasty in the very same session. Faster treatment means less anxiety, fewer hospital visits, and better outcomes.
We use drug-eluting stents, intravascular ultrasound (IVUS), and fractional flow reserve (FFR) measurement to ensure every procedure is performed with the highest level of precision — and that stents are placed only where genuinely needed.
Our team has performed thousands of interventional procedures — from routine single-vessel angioplasties to complex multi-vessel interventions and structural heart procedures like TAVI.
Patients travel from across West Bengal, Odisha, Jharkhand, and the North-East for interventional cardiac care at Citadel Hospital — because they know they will receive world-class treatment without having to leave the region.
Your cardiologist reviews your symptoms, history, and any existing reports. They explain what the likely issue is, what test is needed next, and what treatment may follow.
Baseline tests — ECG, blood work, and echocardiography — are completed. Most are available the same day at our in-house diagnostic centre.
Performed in our cath lab under local anaesthesia. You are awake and monitored throughout. Most procedures take between 30 minutes and 2 hours.
After the procedure, you are monitored in our cardiac observation unit. Most patients are discharged within 24 to 48 hours with a written care plan, medication list, and follow-up appointment.
Our cardiac team schedules regular follow-up consultations to monitor your recovery, review your medications, and ensure your heart continues to function well long after the procedure.
Interventional cardiology procedures including coronary angiography, angioplasty, stenting, and TAVI are covered under most major health insurance policies, corporate insurance plans, and government health schemes. Citadel Hospital is empanelled with leading cashless TPA networks across India.
Our patient support team handles all pre-authorisation and documentation — so you do not have to worry about paperwork when you should be focused on your health.

Regular cardiology manages heart conditions through medication, monitoring, and lifestyle changes. Interventional cardiology goes further — using catheter-based procedures to physically open blocked arteries, replace valves, or close defects inside the heart, without open-heart surgery. At Citadel Hospital, Kolkata, our interventional team performs thousands of these procedures each year, with a 24x7 cath lab and NABH-accredited safety standards.
No. Angioplasty is minimally invasive and is performed under local anaesthesia — most patients are fully awake and comfortable throughout. A catheter is guided to the blocked artery, a small balloon opens it, and a stent is placed to keep it open. At Citadel Hospital, Kolkata, most patients are discharged within 24 to 48 hours and return to normal activity within a week.
The decision depends on how many arteries are blocked and the severity of each blockage. Single or double vessel disease is usually treated with angioplasty and stenting. Severe multi-vessel disease may require bypass surgery (CABG). Our interventional cardiologists at Citadel Hospital, Taratala will review your angiography report and recommend the safest, most effective option for your specific condition — clearly and without pressure.
The most common signs of blocked coronary arteries are chest pain or tightness during physical activity, shortness of breath with minimal effort, unusual fatigue, and pain radiating to the left arm, shoulder, or jaw. In some people, there are no symptoms at all — which is why regular cardiac check-ups matter. If you notice any of these signs, call Citadel Hospital on 033 1234 5678 immediately.

The cost of angioplasty in Kolkata depends on the number of vessels treated and the type of stent used.
